Some observed seasonal changes in extratropical general circulation: A study in terms of vorticity
Extratropical eddy distributions in four months typical of the four seasons are treated in terms of temporal mean and temporal r.m.s. values of the geostrophic relative vorticity. The geographical distributions of these parameters at the 300 mb level show that the arithmetic mean fields are highly biased representatives of the extratropical eddy distributions. The zonal arithmetic means of these parameters are also presented. These show that the zonal-and-time mean relative vorticity is but a small fraction of the zonal mean of the temporal r.m.s. relative vorticity, K. The reasons for considering the r.m.s. values as the temporal normal values of vorticity in the extratropics are given in considerable detail. The parameter K is shown to be of considerable importance in locating the extratropical frontal jet streams (EFJ) in time-and-zonal average distributions. The study leads to an understanding of the seasonal migrations of the EFJ which have not been explored until now
Acquiring Correct Knowledge for Natural Language Generation
Natural language generation (NLG) systems are computer software systems that
produce texts in English and other human languages, often from non-linguistic
input data. NLG systems, like most AI systems, need substantial amounts of
knowledge. However, our experience in two NLG projects suggests that it is
difficult to acquire correct knowledge for NLG systems; indeed, every knowledge
acquisition (KA) technique we tried had significant problems. In general terms,
these problems were due to the complexity, novelty, and poorly understood
nature of the tasks our systems attempted, and were worsened by the fact that
people write so differently. This meant in particular that corpus-based KA
approaches suffered because it was impossible to assemble a sizable corpus of
high-quality consistent manually written texts in our domains; and structured
expert-oriented KA techniques suffered because experts disagreed and because we
could not get enough information about special and unusual cases to build
robust systems. We believe that such problems are likely to affect many other
NLG systems as well. In the long term, we hope that new KA techniques may
emerge to help NLG system builders. In the shorter term, we believe that
understanding how individual KA techniques can fail, and using a mixture of
different KA techniques with different strengths and weaknesses, can help
developers acquire NLG knowledge that is mostly correct

Exploring the moral compass: denunciations in a Facebook carpool group
With the advent of the internet and social media, car and vanpooling have become easily available alternatives to public transport in many parts of the world. This paper draws on publicly available data from a Facebook car and vanpooling group used by Slovenian cross-border commuters to make their journeys to and from Austria more economically sustainable. It examines public displays of moral indignation following allegations of malpractice by relatively new members whose whole purpose in joining the group was to earn a living from driving vans across borders. Vanpool users collaboratively denounce van service providers for transgressing some of the social responsibilities that ought to bind members of the group together and for their lack of accountability. The accusations which entail exaggerations, complaints, insults and threats, among other hostile verbal attacks, convey moral indignation and are similarly resisted and challenged by the drivers. They offer a window into conflicting behavioural expectations at a time of socioeconomic change and transition. The alleged lack of service van providers’ accountability which, in turn, informs the van users’ displays of moral indignation is indicative of the moral relativism that emerges as a result of the relocalisation and transforming nature of a contemporary global practice at a time when changes in social life are underway. The primacy of the economic return that vanpooling provides van service providers and cross-commuters with is oriented to by the former as outstripping typical social responsibilities related to the provision of the regulated services, and by the latter, as morally unjustifiable despite acknowledging its economic value
Interhemispheric comparison of atmospheric circulation features as evaluated from Nimbus satellite data
A relationship is established between relative geostrophic vorticity on an isobaric surface and the Laplacian of the underlying layer-mean temperature. This relationship is used to investigate the distribution of vorticity and baroclinicity in a jet-stream model which is constantly recurrent in the winter troposphere. The investigation shows that the baroclinic and vorticity fields of the extratropical troposphere must be bifurcated with two extrema in the middle and subpolar latitudes. This pattern is present in daily tropospheric meridional cross-sections. The reasons for the disappearance of bifurcation in the time-and-longitude averaged distributions are discussed
Shape of a liquid front upon dewetting
We examine the profile of a liquid front of a film that is dewetting a solid
substrate. Since volume is conserved, the material that once covered the
substrate is accumulated in a rim close to the three phase contact line.
Theoretically, such a profile of a Newtonian liquid resembles an exponentially
decaying harmonic oscillation that relaxes into the prepared film thickness.
For the first time, we were able to observe this behavior experimentally. A
non-Newtonian liquid - a polymer melt - however, behaves differently. Here,
viscoelastic properties come into play. We will demonstrate that by analyzing
the shape of the rim profile. On a nm scale, we gain access to the rheology of

Negative quantum capacitance in graphene nanoribbons with lateral gates
We present numerical simulations of the capacitive coupling between graphene
nanoribbons of various widths and gate electrodes in different configurations.
We compare the influence of lateral metallic or graphene side gate structures
on the overall back gate capacitive coupling. Most interestingly, we find a
complex interplay between quantum capacitance effects in the graphene
nanoribbon and the lateral graphene side gates, giving rise to an
unconventional negative quantum capacitance. The emerging non-linear capacitive
couplings are investigated in detail. The experimentally relevant relative
lever arm, the ratio between the coupling of the different gate structures, is

Real-time 3D Tracking of Articulated Tools for Robotic Surgery
In robotic surgery, tool tracking is important for providing safe tool-tissue
interaction and facilitating surgical skills assessment. Despite recent
advances in tool tracking, existing approaches are faced with major
difficulties in real-time tracking of articulated tools. Most algorithms are
tailored for offline processing with pre-recorded videos. In this paper, we
propose a real-time 3D tracking method for articulated tools in robotic
surgery. The proposed method is based on the CAD model of the tools as well as
robot kinematics to generate online part-based templates for efficient 2D
matching and 3D pose estimation. A robust verification approach is incorporated
to reject outliers in 2D detections, which is then followed by fusing inliers
with robot kinematic readings for 3D pose estimation of the tool. The proposed
method has been validated with phantom data, as well as ex vivo and in vivo
experiments. The results derived clearly demonstrate the performance advantage

Deuteron Momentum Distribution in KD2HPO4
The momentum distribution in KD2PO4(DKDP) has been measured using neutron
Compton scattering above and below the weakly first order
paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition(T=229K). There is very litte
difference between the two distributions, and no sign of the coherence over two
locations for the proton observed in the paraelectric phase, as in KH2PO4(KDP).
We conclude that the tunnel splitting must be much less than 20mev. The width
of the distribution indicates that the effective potential for DKDP is
significantly softer than that for KDP. As electronic structure calculations
indicate that the stiffness of the potential increases with the size of the
coherent region locally undergoing soft mode fluctuations, we conclude that
there is a mass dependent quantum coherence length in both systems.Comment: 6 pages 5 figure

Findings are presented for IRIS data from NIMBUS 3 in mapping the global ozone distribution. The seasonal and regional variations of ozone, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, reveal features that were not evident from the sparse ground-based ozone observation network in this hemisphere. Towards radiation transport modelling in divertors with the EIRENE code
Opacity effects, in particular of Lyman lines, in divertors are believed to be relevant for plasma spectroscopy and for the overall divertor dynamics through possible redistribution of excited hydrogen atoms and radiation losses. Quite elaborate computational radiation transport tools have been developed, specialized for numerous applications. The task in fusion research has been adaptation to fusion edge plasma conditions. In this paper, we start from an existing kinetic neutral particle code already well adapted to divertor applications, and extend this from the 'particle' simulation to an analogue 'photon gas' simulation. It is shown how this can be achieved and that a quite flexible and detailed divertor radiation transport code can conveniently be obtained. We apply this to study Lyman opacity effects on population kinetics and hydrogen divertor radiation losses
